![]() The Gilded Hour is a historical fiction taking place in the late 1800’s in New York City. If that sort of thing doesn’t interest you, then feel free to skip over this review. ![]() This book is not fantasy or science fiction. Occasionally a different sort of book will strike my hard enough that I’ll find it necessary to veer off the path and talk about something a bit different. Typically, I reserve this website for fantasy and science fiction book reviews. Faced with their helplessness, Anna must make an unexpected choice between holding on to the pain of her past and letting love into her life.įor Sophie, an obstetrician and the orphaned daughter of free people of color, helping a desperate young mother forces her to grapple with the oath she took as a doctor-and thrusts her and Anna into the orbit of Anthony Comstock, a dangerous man who considers himself the enemy of everything indecent and of anyone who dares to defy him. With the gravity-defying Brooklyn Bridge nearly complete and New York in the grips of anti-vice crusader Anthony Comstock, Anna Savard and her cousin Sophie-both graduates of the Woman’s Medical School-treat the city’s most vulnerable, even if doing so may put everything they’ve strived for in jeopardy.Īnna’s work has placed her in the path of four children who have lost everything, just as she herself once had. The year is 1883, and in New York City, it’s a time of dizzying splendor, crushing poverty, and tremendous change. ![]() ![]() She is rescued from starvation by the dragon Meenore, who offers her a position as ITs assistant. To add to her woes, her single copper is stolen almost as soon as she sets foot in the city. Alas for poor Elodie, the practice of offering free ten-year apprenticeships has just been abolished, and she discovers too late that she is too poor to pay for her apprenticeship. Two Castles is a book that adults will find as captivating as children and teenagers.Įlodie, the heroine, is a twelve-year old farm girl who sets off to the city of Two Castles to apprentice herself to the mansioners and realize her dream of becoming an actor. ![]() ![]() In Two Castles, her words have more gravity, and the pace is more ponderous. In Ella Enchanted, her prose is breathless and fast-paced. Strangely enough, although A Tale of Two Castles has a much younger protagonist than Ella Enchanted, I found the writing style in this book infinitely less juvenile. And in Two Castles, she manages to weave her magic, yet again. The beauty of her writing lies in her ability to create enduringly endearing characters. ![]() ![]() There is only one word to describe Gail Carson Levine’s books, and that is ‘charming’. ![]() ![]() ![]() At first, I thought that a rabid was a typo for a rabbit. ![]() And where now it was a pleasant read, it was lacking. Right away I have to say that if I read this six years ago, I would have been ABSOLUTELY ecstatic. So, where to start? I had this book on my shelf since 2012 or 2013, but I never had time to read it. This review also appears on our blog, Cuddlebuggery But then Kagawa did a lot of:Īnd then Stephanie said the plot was slow, and I was like.Īnd then I got to the end and Allie was like. So then I was worried about the writing since I’d been on the fence about The Iron Fey. ![]() Then stuff with them happened and I was like. Then Zeke is like ewwww Vampires suck and I was like. So then Allie goes trekking through the woods and I’m like.Īnd then she meets up Zeke and I was like. Right away from the beginning of the novel Allie was pretty ass kicking.Īnd then Kanin the vampire showed up and I was like. Then she gets turned into a vampire and struggles with the morality of being a monster.Ī comparable representation on the scale of awesomeness - not a literal depiction. So Allie is an orphaned teenager in a dystopian fantasy where people are enslaved by vampire masters. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Iago uses this and other ploys-misinterpreted conversations, insinuations, and a lost handkerchief-to convince Othello that Desdemona and Cassio are lovers. Dickens tells all of these both through the narrative of the novel’s heroine, Esther Summerson, and as an omniscient narrator. Here, Duhigg details a 4 step process for changing any habit. Unfortunately, the best part (in my opinion) is buried in the back of the book on page 275. To illustrate this concept, check out this flowchart that Duhigg offers on his blog: The Reward: The satisfaction you seek by following the routine. The Routine: A physical or emotional action you take to obtain the reward. The Cue: A situational trigger that is based on a reward you’re seeking. This is a circular process with three main components: ![]() The Power of Habit is broken into three main sections Part 1: Habits of Individualsĭuhigg begins with a description of the habit loop.
